LG Oreo update: Android 8

LG Oreo update: Android 8.0 OTA for V30 is rolling out in the US

Table of content

We expected LG to hand the G6 users an Oreo before the end of November 2017, but here we are at the end of December, and we are yet to see LG roll out the stable version of its Android 8.0 build for any of its device.

LG surely surprised us when it opted to roll out a beta version of Android Oreo for the V30 (and V30+), but we would expect it roll out Oreo now. LG was good with Android OS upgrades in the last 2-3 years, but now it seems they don’t believe in quicker update release as they once did.

LG Android Oreo update list

Here is a list of LG devices with their eligibility status and expected release date as regards Android 8.0 Oreo update.

LG G6 Oreo update

Expected release date: February 2018

Update [December 30, 2017]: A new report indicates that LG G6 Android 8.0 update is set for release only by February 2018. That’s not very far actually, but it feels a tad disappointing when you were hoping for an Oct-Nov 2017 release, based on LG impressive work with Nougat and Marshmallow OS updates.

Update [October 31, 2017]: For what it’s worth, even though there is no announcement from LG about Oreo yet, and there is no news on their Oreo beta program either, a Geekbench listing has the LG G6 running Android 8.0. Yes, these are easy to fake, but given the timing, it seems genuine one. Could it be a LineageOS build? We don’t know, but we sure will know soon from LG, that we are sure about.

It’s simple: If it’s not V30, then G6 would be the first device in LG Android 8.0 update list. The company could begin beta testing of it’s Oreo update for the LG G6 — probably in Korea if we look at history as proof — sometime towards the end of October.

After some time spent on gathering issues in Oreo beta and fixing the bugs found therein, we could look out for G6 Oreo to hit us anytime in November 2017. The update could begin rolling out in Korea first, and may soon become available across Europe, US and India within a matter of its release in Korea.

Those using the LG G6 at AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon can watch for the LG G6 Android 8.0 OTA to release sometime in December 2017-January 2018.

LG V30 and V30+ Oreo update

Update [January 14, 2018]: The Android 8.0 Oreo update for LG V30 is now available as an OTA in the US, coming in as software version US99818F. This for the unlocked V30 handsets only, but we expect the carrier variants at the T-Mobile, Sprint (V30+), AT&T and Verizon Wireless to join in soon.

Update [December 26, 2017]: LG has begun rolling the Android Oreo update for the V30 and V30+ in Korea. LG had been beta testing its Android 8.0 update for about a month. The Oreo update arrives as software version V20e and is sized 1411.90MB. Here’s an announcement from LG.

Update [November 27, 2017]: LG has begun pushing V30 Oreo update as a beta in Korea, where the users are receiving OTA to software version V300K19C. The Android 8.0 update OTA is sized about 1193MB and comes with November 2017 security patch too. We have the changelog in the screenshot below, but sadly, we know Korean only as good as you do, hence can’t get you a meaningful translation out of that. LG also revealed that are targeting December release of the stable release for public.

Update [November 27, 2017]: The LG V30+ models in Korea are also being upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo. The V30+ comes as model no. V300L, and as the build remains same as 19C (one for V30), the software version of the 8.0 update here is V300L19C.

Expected release date: December 2017

Well, this is LG’s best device to date, a device with which LG seems to have put everything alright. It would be only fitting that LG launches the Android 8.0 Oreo update for V30 as soon as possible.

As I mentioned above, LG could release the Oreo update for G6 first, but it’s hard to rule out V30 taking that crown. But we shall know more once LG’s Oreo beta plans are revealed. Whichever device gets first Android 8.0 beta would get the first stable release of Oreo too.

All in all, expect LG V30 Oreo rollout happening before the end of November 2017, beginning in Korea and followed by Europe, India, and US (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint and Verizon).

LG Q6 Oreo update

Oct 31: The G6 was recently found on Geekbench running Oreo. Although that doesn’t really mean a lot, we have a feeling we would hear something official on Oreo from LG really soon.

Even a budget Android device is guaranteed to receive at least one big Android OS update, at least from the major popular OEMs like LG, Motorola, Huawei, Samsung, HTC, etc. So even though the LG Q6 runs on Nougat at the moment, it’s guaranteed to receive Android 8.0 update.

When the LG Q6 Oreo comes out is another tricky question, though. We are sure that LG would have his hands busy with Android 8.0 rollout for G6 and V30 at the beginning, but it would seem fair if it decides to work on 8.0 for G6 and V20, before taking up Q6 and other mid-range devices.

Until an official announcement drops by from LG, it’s hard to say when 8.0 for Q6 would be released, but if we are to guess, a March 2018 rollout looks likely.

LG G5 Oreo update

G5 was among the first few Android devices to receive Nougat last year, which is why we think of G6 to beat other Android devices like Galaxy S8 and HTC U11 for Oreo release. But because LG didn’t give G4 Nougat treatment, it raises doubt on G5 Oreo release.

We, however, think that last year was an exception LG is less likely to repeat. We could see LG begin rollout of Oreo update for LG G5 sometime in Q1 of 2018.

As is the case with LG software updates, the G5 Oreo rollout could begin in Korea first, followed by other regions and carriers around the world.

Having upgraded the LG G5 Lite (or LG G5 SE) to Nougat from Marshmallow, there are only slim chances of LG releasing an 8.0 update for the device. The device is a mid-range, which often see only one major Android OS support from OEMs, and that’s how it is.

Expected release date: March-April 2018

LG V20 was the last flagship from LG to sport a secondary display as a ticker. The V20 was a popular phone but never lived up to his hype. Based on feedback received from V10 and V20, LG removed the ticker from the V30 but continued with the high-quality sound it has given us with the V series.

The V20 was launched with Nougat, in fact, it was the first device to come pre-installed with Nougat, such was LG’s awesome work with Android updates last year.

LG should be rolling out V20 Oreo update once it’s done with Android 8.0 release for its flagship devices of this year. Which means it could take a while before we see 8.0 OTA rollout for V20. that’s why release looks likely to be happening in March-April 2018.

Expected release date: March-April 2018

Although a solid device with cool specsheet and all, the LG V10 won’t receive Oreo love. The device is already past its software update lifecycle, and it would be cruel to expect LG to update a two-year-old device with a major Android OS update.

Let’s the device gets a breath of fresh air via a custom ROM like LineageOS 15, which comes off running on Android 8.0, and is already available for a variety of devices. Check our LineageOS 15 device list here.

LG K10 Oreo update

Expected release date: Q2 2018

There are two editions of LG K10, one released in 2016, while other, a more recent one, released in 2017 and thus aptly dubbed LG K10 2017. Well, only one of them would see the sunlight in Oreo. And that’s LG K10 2017, that comes with 2GB RAM, and is identified with model no. M250N and X400.

The original K10 2016 has received an update from Lollipop to Marshmallow, and that is the end of the road for the device — as one major Android OS update is they get.

The LG K10 2017 comes with Nougat, and thus would have Android 8.0 as its only one major Android update.

LG K8 Oreo update

Expected release date: Q2 2018

Like the K10 above, only the LG K8 2017 edition stands a chance to receive the Oreo update from LG. There is no confirmation about this yet, but given that these devices get only one Android OS update that involves a change in name of the version, it looks very likely that Oreo would arrive on K8 2017 sooner or later. The LG K8 2017 is known by its model no. M200N, X240, and US215 (US Cellular).

However, the K8 handset that was released in 2016 by LG won’t receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update. That’s sure.

Expected release date: Q2 2018

With 4GB RAM and solid Snapdragon 820 processor under the hood, the Q8 is more than capable of running the latest update of Android OS, the 8.0. Launched with Android 7.0, and even though it’s still waiting on the 7.1.1, the device should see the Oreo coming down as an OTA in the year 2018.

When exactly is a matter of pure guess, but we would go by Q2 2018 release of LG Q8 Oreo.

LG Stylus 3

Expected release date: Q2 2018

The LG Stylus 3 runs on Nougat right now, and it’s powered by 3GB RAM and MT6750 processor, all of which makes it an ideal candidate for Oreo OS.

Given that the Stylus 3 is a budget range handset, it naturally won’t receive the Android 8.0 update as fast the premium flagships do, which is why a Q2 2018 release looks very likely for the device.

LG devices not eligible for Oreo update

These devices from LG won’t receive an update to Oreo. Here’s a list of ineligible LG devices as regards Oreo update:

Do let us know what you think about LG’s Android Oreo plans?

Given LG’s past history on releasing latest Android OS update, we can assume safely that LG would be quick to roll out Oreo OTA for G6, V30, and V20, but would it able to follow the Android 8.0 update for budget range of devices too, like Q6, Q8, K8/K10 2017, Stylus 3, etc?
